What is FinViz?

FinViz (Financial Visualizations) is a stock screener that offers individual investors a single platform to screen stocks, view market visualizations, backtest, read financial statements, view real-time quotes, set email alerts, and much more.

This platform is best for long-term and short-term investors who want to find stocks that fit specific search criteria using customizable filters. The platform offers technical and fundamental screeners, signals, and much more.

Finviz review

Finviz was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Slovakia. Over the years, the platform has grown significantly and is used by individual investors, professional traders, portfolio managers, and even some academic institutions.

FinViz is most famously known for its free stock screener, but it also offers an elite version with additional features for $39 a month.

Who Should Use Finviz?

Best for:

The platform’s user interface is intuitive, offering various charts, maps, and screener tools. It’s ideal for beginners and experienced investors.

Features

Finviz offers free and paid features, including screeners, heat maps, news, data, and educational resources.

Let’s get into it.

Stock Screener

Finviz offers one of the best stock screeners

around.

It’s powerful and customizable, allowing users to filter stocks based on :

  • Fundamentals [P/E, EPS Growth, Debt ratio, Net profit margin]
  • Technicals [Chart patterns, Candlesticks, or RSI levels]
  • Signals [Stock market price, Market capitalization or Analyst upgrades, Chart patterns]

Note: Most screener features are free except for the Alert and Export features.

The FinViz stock screener covers over 8,500 stocks and ETFs. While it does not cover the entire market, most users will find it sufficient for their investing and trading needs.

The interface is easy to navigate and boasts 67 essential fundamental and technical criteria to help with your stock research.

Additionally, it offers the flexibility to combine the screeners with 30 distinct charting signals—such as patterns related to insider trading or transactions—to identify potential investment opportunities.

Unlike other platforms that provide additional features like more search filters or ready-made screeners, FinViz maintains a more focused approach without these additions.

Heat Maps and Groups

Another helpful feature of FinViz is its Heat Maps functionality. The heat maps offer a glance at market trends with colorful visuals indicating direction and significance.

Heat Maps Features:

  • Share Direction: Red indicates falling, green for rising.
  • Market Categories: Maps for S&P500, World Stock, Industry (Technology, Financial, Consumer, etc.), and ETFs.
  • Visual Displays: Options to view as tables, bar charts, spectrum, grid, and charts.
  • Customization: Selection between various time frames and combination of multiple settings.

Groups Features:

Further divides the market into sectors, industries, countries, and capitalization, all displayed in various visual formats. These visually striking tools simplify interpretation and are especially appealing for those who prefer visual data.

News and Data

Finviz offers real-time news and data from popular financial information and blog outlets like the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Market Watch, Zero Hedge, Seeking Alpha, and many more. You can sort articles chronologically or by source.

Note: NYT and Bloomberg articles behind a paywall so you can’t read the articles.

For most individual investors the news and data offered by FinViz is sufficient, but if you really want the best tool for trading real-time news, I recommend Benzinga Pro.

Pricing and Value

Finviz offers a free and paid version (Elite). The free version is comprehensive and enough for casual investors, but the Elite version adds features like real-time data, advanced charting, and more.

Free

Finviz’s Free Version is available to unregistered users, and provides access to plenty of information.

For example, you can view FinViz’s comprehensive list of stocks across the stock market as a whole and as individual stocks.

  • Price: Free
  • Delayed Charts
  • Newsfeeds
  • Stock information (Average Volumne, ROI)
  • Statements (3 Year history)

Clicking on—or searching up—a stock ticker will bring up a delayed chart, news feeds for that stock, stock information (such as average volume, ROI, price change, etc.), and statements that go back three years.

Registered

Registered users can also use the site for free, but can use a few more features compared to unregistered users.

  • Price: Free
  • Track up to 50 portfolios
  • 50 tickers per portfolio
  • 50 screener presets
  • Layout customization

FinViz Elite (Subscription Required)

By paying $39.50 per month (or $299.50 per year with annual billing) for a FinViz Elite subscription, users can unlock the full capabilities of FinViz.

  • Price: $39.50/month or $299/year (Save 35% a Year)
  • No Ads
  • Track up to 100 portfolios
  • 100 tickers per portfolio
  • 200 screener presets
  • Real-time data
  • Fundamental & Advanced charts
  • Backtesting
  • Custom Screeners
  • Alerts
  • Technical studies, and much more
Finviz Elite Features

Drawbacks

While you can’t really complain if you’re using the free version, there are some drawbacks you should be aware of if you are considering upgrading to an elite subscription:

  • Real time data only updates once a minute
  • 67 fundamental criteria compared to over 165 for TradingView, and 650 for Stock Rover.
  • No ability to save notes or add indicators on interactive charting.

Final Thoughts

Finviz is a valuable tool for anyone interested in stock market analysis. Its rich features make it suitable for various users, but some might find the paid version ideal for professional use. It’s recommended to try the free version first to see if it meets your needs. However, the constant bombardment of ads could be more frustrating, even if you are a casual user.
